Secretariat's Jockey, Ron Turcotte

a really terrific program
I truly enjoyed this program...Ron Turcotte was the legendary rider of Secretariat but also Riva Ridge the year before and winner of 3,000 races before he realized his greatest fear and was paralyzed. This program traces his career as a dual story line to his visiting the 3 races of a current triple crown season. It shows him interacting with current jockeys as well as fans. This movie also has great footage of Secretariat and current video of the owner Penny Chereny. Its a documentary that spans many decades and is heart warming and heart breaking and ultimately triumphant. Recommended

Tech stuff... 16x9 Widescreen and the current footage looks HD very nice indeed, with a lovely score.

SECRETARIATS JOCKEY
REALLY ENJOYED THIS MOVIE,WITH RON TURCOTTE AND BIG RED.
WOULD RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE TO A FRIEND.
RON TURCOTTE,GOT TO RIDE INTO HISTORY,WITH THE GREATEST RACE HORSE,THAT EVER LIVED.

Stripper

An Unconventional Story
I bought this because a friend of mine is in it - she's one of the audition participants and came in at #2 at the end. The story, while fact based, is interesting in the sense that what people often think of as "just another Las Vegas story" can have many sides to it. It does a good job of telling the behind the scenes story of what Las Vegas was like in the post-mob days as the bean counters were taking over the casino business. The characters (women) are a good cross section of those who try to get into the entertainment field. While I think my friend should have won (of course!) it is still a good story, and the 'scenery' is outstanding! I would recommend it to those interested in what it can take to get into the 'business'.

Oldie but goodie
I saw this a few decades ago and its still interesting to watch today. It gives an insight on the first annual strippers convention and all the competition from all over.

V
Yes, I just wanted to say what a wonderful movie I thought that it was very well done. I'm a person who believes that women should always feel good about themselves and have healthy body images. Nowadays, lots of females have body image issues. Perhaps, even myself a little, but I believe that women should always feel the very best about themselves and work with what they've got to achieve their maximum potential. I believe that the females in the movie basically exuded that they felt that they (and they alone) were truly lovable. That's how I tend to view myself, as well. I wouldn't (necessarily) do what they do (unless it was with someone special to me) and someone whom I would like to be in a monogamous relationship with. My Dad always said that when women have it, they should flaunt it. I believe that the messages made by those women were more exemplary of that fact Even though Dad didn't mean it (necessarily) to that extreme.

Thanks.

This is probably the best ever gayfilm. First of all, the entire cast is so talented. Secondly, these guys are hot. The story line was very well planned in regards to keeping the murderer a secret until almost the end. Icant wait for season 2.

Bridge To The Sun

Moving love story set in war-torn WW2 Japan
This autobiographical story of American Gwen Harold's marriage to diplomat Terry Terasaki is a very realistic look at the cultural clash between Japan and the United States before and during World War 2. In the midst of racial prejudice and differing beliefs & practices, is a beautifully sincere love story between two people of vastly different backgrounds and ethnicity, told with honesty and integrity. Carroll Baker is very emotional as the conflicted Gwen struggling to accept Japanese customs as an unwelcome American wife. James Shigeta, always marvelous, gives a wonderful performance in stilted English (for this part only, as he is an American) as the proud diplomat Terry, a Japanese national, who loves his wife and child so deeply yet cannot let go of his inherent restraint even at the end when he needs Gwen the most. Filmed in black and white which makes the war scenes and 1940s era very believable, this is a very good film told from the unique perspective of an American...

Bridge to the Sun
I recall seeing this film when I was a teenager, and enjoyed it just as much when I revisited it just recently.
The story is lovely but tragic, and I always enjoy a love story especially one based on a true life situation.
So enjoy

Loved It!!!
I truly enjoyed this movie and the book as well. Too often when a movie is made from a book a lot is lost in transmitting it to a screen play, but this movie did follow the book, I will recommend it to others.

Facing The Giants [HD]

Facing the Giants Delivers the Goods and the Word
There are basically 10 reasons "Facing the Giants" is a movie that every family in America should watch together:

#1. This is a movie about overcoming great obstacles, something every family faces.

#2. This is a movie that does not rely on sex, violence, or profanity to carry a weak or boring plot.

#3. This is a movie that examines the relationships between family members, and offers sound Biblical advice on how to make those relationships more successful.

#4. This is a movie void of famous actors with large egos to build upon, which means cast was able to focus on the overall production and not worry about the performance of one actor or actress.

#5. This is a film that stirs all kinds of emotions and can definitely clean out clogged up tearducts.

#6. This is a movie with some great football action scenes that rival any larger, Hollywood, big-budget film.

#7. This is a movie written and produced by...

Great Movie
A football coach who is facing being fired and having trouble conceiving a child with his wife feels overwhelmed and turns to Christ to help him through the tough times in his life. The message of the movie is that while you can't control what happens in life, you must give it your all anyway. He decided that whether or not his team wins, whether or not he keeps his job, whether or not he can have children, he will do his best in every endeavor in his life and glorify God regardless of the outcomes.

His wife is played by a sweet and lovely actress who faces her own hardship as a woman who wants children and is having trouble conceiving. Many of the teammates have personal issues they must also overcome.

This is a great family film, very uplifting, and I'm glad I came across it.

With God all things are possible
Where can I begin? This movie is awesome. Christian or non-Christian, you can't helped but be moved by this movie. The plot, the characters, the message, everything is just great. God truly had a hand in this movie. I can't wait to get the DVD so that I can watch it over and over. My eight year old son sat and watched the movie as if he was glued to the screen. Get the movie. Watch it with your family. God will change your life. Check out Flywheel as well.

The Majorettes

Decent... kind of
Well, I came in watching this movie with very low expectations, and I got, for the most part, what I expected. There are some nice moments, like the first kill in the convertible, and the dialogue between the two kids before that, but mainly, the movie was a by the book slasher, and then the end was a by the book revenge flick. The only thing that wasn't by the book in this movie was a few nice twists towards the end, even though they weren't big enough to save the movie from being rather bland. The acting for the most part was bottom of the barrel, with the exception of a few people. And the movie just seemed like it wanted to be to main stream for its own good. Some parts just cried out for a Troma style over the top feel, but instead they were stuck in total seriousness. That killed the mood, considering that this is a movie about a man killing majorettes. Oh, and don't expect gore. There is blood, but that's it.
One thing that really bugged me was the disk it self...

One of the worst 80s cheese fests
Slasher films are known for their who-dun-it plot, gory slash and death scenes, and most of the time a cat and mouse chase scene betwen the killer and the victim/ or between the killer and the final girl/guy. Many slasher films are atmospheric, creepy, suspenseful and/or gory. The Majorettes is one of those bad cheesy flicks that is nt worth a dime. I feel that there are some great scenes in this film but those can never save this from being unsophisticated, stupid, having horrid acting( like they picked random people off the street!). There are some very good looking females but they are supposed to be butone twirlers!!?! Which is really cheesy seeing as right in the beginning of this the are TRYING to dance to some awful 80s keyboard song and none of them can act or dance or twirl a butone for that matter. One great chase scene follows and then a death scene but the plot falls apart bc of the bad acting and the stupid script. This is not worth time and money especially when you can...

The Majorettes
The Majorettes is an 80's horror film, so it was a must watch for me. The first fifteen minutes has alot of storylines going on so it can get confusing and seem like there is about three stories going on. The first kill was very well done, the killer favors slashing the throats of the majorettes and then baptizing them into water. It also has faint religious overtones but this film has so much going on that its hard to follow. One girl was set to inherit half a million dollars and that story gets lost in the shuffle. Overall, it can be an enjoyable film but has way too many stories going on and it can get confusing.

The Mirror Has Two Faces

"I tried that once, he thought I had something in my eye."
Streisand's third directorial effort was greeted with surprisingly vicious reaction from both fans and critics, nearly all of whom immediately labeled it as an over-the-top vanity piece. It also had considerable difficulty at the box office. After opening with strong numbers, the $45 million budgeted film took a nose dive and did not recover. It ended up taking in $46 million domestically ($65 million worldwide), which was a respectable take, but far from the blockbuster status of films like A STAR IS BORN or THE PRINCE OF TIDES. When considering all of the above information, it's a bit surprising to discover that the film is nothing more than an entertaining and heart-felt romantic comedy. In hindsight, it's hard to understand why a such a harmless and light-weight film became such a lighting rod for scathing reviews and harsh comments.

While the storyline is predictable, the movie is actually very well-done with a brisk pace, compelling characters, and a witty screenplay...

A charming story of personal growth and self-acceptance.
Barbra Streisand is not dowdy, yet her perfection in assuming the role as a lonely, middle-aged woman (Rose) is flawless. Rose is an excellent and popular college teacher. She knows how to teach, the way to involve and enchant a rowdy class, and she would rather watch baseball than go on another "dead end" date.

Jeff Bridges (Greg) is the handsome, yet exceedingly boring teacher. Most of the students in his math classes sleep, pass notes, chat. He is a lonely man, but all of his interpersonal relationships end as the woman moves on. He believes it is because he chooses stunning woman and then becomes intimate. He decides to find a perfect mate, and the main criterion is that she be ugly. His campaign begins with an advertisement. Claire is Rose?s sister, and she responds to the ad as if she were Rose.

Rose lives with her mother Hanna Morgan, played by Lauren Bacall, who did receive an Oscar nomination for the role of a selfish, self-absorbed, snob...

Mirror Has Two Faces
While this movie will never win any acclaim or awards, it was a light romantic comedy that hit a home run with me. I liked Jeff Bridges and Barbara Streisand together. They were funny and had good rapport together on screen.

The President's Man

One of the Best Chuck Norris Movies ever
This is one of the best Chuck Norris movies I have ever seen. The martial arts in this film was very thrilling. Chuck Norris

works directly for the President. He does a great job on keeping matters confidential, and when it comes to impossible jobs to be done, the President goes directly to Chuck Norris. He also has the task of rescuing the First Lady from terrorists, and then once again, he must face new missions. This is a movie not to be missed. If you like Chuck Norris, you will love this action packed movie. I will definitely buy any Chuck Norris movie I can find.

Oddy, I enjoyed this movie
The acting was pretty bad, the music was horrible, but I liked this movie for the simple fact that it delivered what I expected. It's a good action movie made in the spirit of the older martial arts genre. I wated it because a few months ago I saw 'Logan's War", and this looked to be very similar. It wasn't as good as 'Logan's War', but was still enjoyable and worth the $2.00.

How can you not love Chuck Norris?
If you love Chuck Norris, you'll love this movie. It's the usual Chuck Norris kick-butt action, but this time he plays the mentor. He is the President's secret agent, of sorts, but realizes that he's getting too old for the job and it is time to hang up his spurs. Enter the new guy. You get the rest of the plot. What's great is that even though Chuck Norris is supposedly aging, like the rest of us, he's just as fast, clever, and macho as always. Gotta love Chuck. A good flick to watch if you have missed seeing him on TV on a regular basis!

This Could Be The Night

A wonderfully touching nightclub comedy.
How Anne Leeds ever got into a nightclub is an interesting question for historians. Anne is a trusting, well-read schoolteacher who, however unlikely, is opposed to segregating herself from colorful people and risky environs. To prove her point, she takes a job as secretary for Rocco, who runs his club with an ex-hood named Tony.

Work begins roughly. In a club where wives on the phone are not told where their husbands are, Anne and Tony share some bristling exchanges. Rocco, meanwhile, adores Anne. She picks out his ties. He shows off her skill at conversation to his friends. He also begins a trend by calling her "Baby," referring to Anne's good-luck innocence.

Soon the whole club is relying on "Baby" -- for competence and inspiration. There is Patsy, a burlesque dancer who wants to be a chef; Crystal, a semi-nostalgic ex-showgirl who also is Patsy's disapproving mother; Ivy, who investigates Anne's love life (she reports back "No hits, no runs, no...

Pleasant 50's Comedy
Perfect example of "the kind of movie they don't make any more". Personable cast: Jean Simmons, appealing as always; very charming Tony Franciosa, at the height of his leading man period; old pros Paul Douglas and Joan Blondell providing delightful comic support; workmanlike screenplay by Isobel Lennart (of FUNNY GIRL and LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME). Good chance to see a young Julie Wilson (who burns down the joint in a couple of sizzling songs) and Neile Adams, post-Broadway and pre-retired-Mrs. Steve McQueen. No barnburner, but a nice way to spend a Saturday night with the VCR.

THINGS CHANGE FOR NIGHTCLUB OWNERS ROCCO AND TONY, WHEN THEY HIRE PRETTY, INNOCENT ANNE!
I caught part of this movie by accident on TV, and I just had to go buy me a copy of this wonderful movie, so that I could see the whole thing. The movie is in black and white, and I JUST LOVED IT!

This is a charming story about a very pretty school teacher named Anne, who has left home for the first time in her life to live in the big city! Anne ends up applying for a part-time job as a secretary for a nightclub called The Tonic, and Rocco the owner likes her right away and hires her, but ex-hood Tony, Rocco's part-owner of the club feels totally different about Anne working with them! But Rocco tells Tony that Anne is going to add class to the place, and that he wants her to work at the club, because he likes having her around!

Everyone that works at the nightclub sees right away that Anne is very different and very innocent; especially Rocco, and Ivy the beautiful nightclub singer; so Ivy has a long girl talk with Anne, and Ivy finds out that Anne has never...

Alien Vs. Predator [HD]

Blu-Ray of AVP DOES have the unrated cut.
Blu Ray review:

The Biggest thing about this BD of AVP that is consistently not mentioned is that the BD contains BOTH the PG-13 theatrical cut AND the unrated directors cut of the film. Amazon only lists the disc as the PG-13 version, and even an external BD review site failed to mention the inclusion of the unrated cut. So if you've wanted to get AVP on BD and haven't due to a lack of the unrated cut, fear not, it's on the disc.

Video quality is good. It's not the best picture I've seen, but it's nowhere near the worst. Definitely better than the DVD 4/5 overall

Sound is good as well. Just like video, it's not the best, but it's not the worst. Choices are DTS-HD 5.1 (4-4.6 mbps) in English. French and Spanish in Regular Dolby Digital 5.1 (not HD audio). Overall a 4/5 for the DTS-HD track.

This review isn't about the movie itself, nor is it meant to be all-inclusive. My main reason for writing the review is that the unrated cut isn't...

In Defense of AVP
While most critics have dripped acid on Paul Anderson's "Alien vs. Predator," apparently due to prima facie objections to the very idea of a non-courtroom-drama with the word "versus" in the title, I was pleasantly surprised by AVP.

Is AVP as great as 1986's "Aliens"? Nope. But I think comparing AVP to "Aliens" is to employ the wrong standard. AVP is not competing with that film, in much the same way that "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" was not competing with the sensational "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." No, "Star Trek VI" was competing with the largely reviled "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier." Similarly, AVP is really competing with the oppressively dark, fundamentally unappealing "Alien 3" and strangely goofy, utterly unexciting "Alien Resurrection"; the last Predator movie, 1990's "Predator 2," was released so long ago and did such middling box office that it hardly figures in the popular imagination anymore.

Some have complained about...

Better than the Theatrical Release, but not by much.
For those of you who see "AVP Unrated" and think "Blood, Gore, Language, Violence, and Nudity"...THINK AGAIN!

Where there was a few flecks of blood, there is now a gallon. Where there were two "campy" scenes, there is now only one, But this is not even an "R" rating version of the film, evidenced further by the PG-13 rating on the back of the DVD case.

This fild should have stuck with the "Director's Cut" name and cut out the "Unrated" label, since in my opinion it does not deserve it. If you can swallow the plausability of the story even a litte bit, the this version is more serious and bloodier than the theatrical release, but not by much. "Campy" scenes still abound. Extra footage, edited in Deleted scenes from the Theatrical DVD version and a few other scene changes make this version a lot more fun to own than the first, but hard core fans of the original movies may still find this title a little wimpy.

With all that negative feedback out of the...

The Debt

If The Debt were a book, it would be one bloody page turner
I saw an advance screening of The Debt tonight. I'll admit, it was a film I kept my eye on once I read about it on the IMDb message boards for Avatar some time ago, since Avatar was another film with Sam Worthngton. I remember it looking pretty interesting, however I'd not heard about it for some time after due to the delays. However during July, it had gotten advertised more, and I was ready to mark down August 31st as a "must see" date. However when I got a pass in an Alliance Films giveaway, I was excited.

And thankfully this movie did not disappoint. The movie comes out next week, I'd say go see it.

A remake of the 2007 Israeli flick of the same name, which I'll admit to having not seen, The Debt follows two of three secret agents who went on a mission to capture the surgeon of Birkneau, and bring him to Israel to expose him for the crimes he committed against Jewish humanity during WWII. His horrifying experiments have left thousands dead in brutal and gory...

A great cast but otherwise disappointing
The Debt (an American remake of a 2007 Israeli film of the same name) is best described as a story on two levels. On one level, it's a melodramatic espionage thriller that takes places in the 1960's, while on the other, it's a mystery that unfolds thirty years later, one that is centered around the events of the original espionage mission. The film cuts back and forth between these two story lines, with a different trio of actors portraying the three main characters in each story line.

In 1966, a trio of Israeli Mossad agents - Rachel Singer (Jessica Chastain), David Peretz (Sam Worthington) and Stefan Gold (Marton Csokas) - are sent behind the Iron Curtain in East Berlin to kidnap an escaped Nazi war criminal, Dieter Vogel (Jesper Christiansen), the infamous "Surgeon of Birkenau". The mission goes awry when, after successfully capturing Vogel, the plan to smuggle him out of East Berlin is disrupted and they are forced to go into hiding while they try to make other...

A strong adult thriller with a great lead performance.
Director John Madden had a smashing back-to-back period in 1997-1998 with "Mrs. Brown" and "Shakespeare in Love", but since then he has been unable to replicate that level of success. "The Debt", a remake of a 2007 Israeli thriller of the same name, is his best film since that period, and deserves a wider audience than it is likely to find in theatres after more than a year spent in limbo due to the difficulties of its distributor. Madden and his cast and crew deliver a very solid adult-oriented Cold War thriller. Spoilers follow.

Our story takes place both in East Berlin in 1966 and Israel in 1997 (I would estimate the split to be perhaps 70/30 in the favour of 1966). It opens with a book launch celebrating the exploits of three Mossad agents in killing a Nazi war criminal: agents Rachel Singer (Helen Mirren), David Peretz (Ciaran Hinds) and Stephan Gold (Tom Wilkinson). We also see the mission in question, where the trio (played in 1966 by Jessica Chastain, Sam...

The Move Before the Move

Fabulous
I'm a dance teacher with over a hundred students. This gal, who I have never heard of, has made one of the best DVD's I've ever seen. My students love the material. Wowza. Often when you buy a video you wonder if it was worth it. With this one, you'll wonder how you can make use of all of the good material. I never write video reviews. Run, don't walk, to go buy this one. It'll have you dancing like a pro. Kudos, Sadiyya. I hope to congratulate you in person one day.

Wonderful Video
I really enjoyed this video. I appreciate how the concepts were explained and applied in the lesson plan. I also enjoyed learning the basic movements and then learning the movements after the concepts were applied. This instructor is a wonderful teacher. I recommend this video to everyone. I think all levels would enjoy it.

Nice DVD
Nice DVD. Choreography may be better for those who are beyond beginner level. However, the concepts presented are appropriate for all levels. Sa'diyya is an awesome teacher and does a good job explaining how to use transitions to add character and dimension to your dance.

Hullabaloo

A very talented cast presented this story exceptionally well!
There were so many talented people presented in this film that it is worth watching many times. Frank Morgan's "impersonations" were hilarious, and there were some truly fabulous performers to showcase the behind-the-scenes activities of the heyday of radio days. It is a must-have addition to a DVD collection of that era.

Hullabaloo a Wonderful Trip Down Memory Lane
A very funny movie of 1940. Frank Morgan is charming as is the rest of the cast. Many fun moments in a radio studio when Frank lipsyncs to the voices of Hedy Lamarr, Charles Boyer, Claudette Colbert, Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy. Great family fun from the innocent days of Hollywood. A very sharp black and white transfer. Highly recommended as an escape from the troubles of the world in 2012!

Cars 2 [HD]

A Love It or Hate It experience...But I loved it!
I had a very unusual experience seeing this movie in theaters.

I watched it, I had a great time, I laughed, cheered, was thrilled, and the moment the credits started to roll the people in the row behind me IMMEDIATELY started spouting off how much they HATED it. I was flabbergasted. I was sorely tempted to turn around and ask them if we even just saw the same movie? How could anyone hate something that's so much FUN?!

But after thinking about it, I could see actually why they didn't get into it. Cars 2 is the first Pixar movie where you really have to 'get the joke' of the premise, or the whole thing falls apart like a house of cards. What this movie is, is the best James Bond movie of the last 15 years (not counting Casino Royale which transcends Bond movies to be just a great spy movie), with a bit of The Accidental Spy thrown in.

I LOVE Bond movies. The crazy opening sequences, the insane gadgets, the quippy lines. And Cars 2 hit pitch perfect...

Dazzling to look at, disappointing to watch
To be fair, Cars 2 is not a dud. But it's not a hit either. As someone who's loved everything Pixar has heretofore come up with, it pains me to say it, but I think Cars 2 will be remembered as Pixar's first miss. It's one of those films that, if you've seen the trailer, you've already seen ninety percent of what there is to see in the movie itself. The rest, unfortunately, is tedium.

The plot, such as it is, is as follows: Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) invites his best buddy from Radiator Springs, Mater (Larry the Cable Guy), to accompany him on an international racing event. In Japan, Mater is mistaken for an American spy by two British agents Finn McMissile (Michael Caine) and Holly Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer) who are investigating a criminal conspiracy involving oil rigs, alternative fuels and a mysterious secret weapon.

Every now and then, a film comes out where you look at it and wonder how it got into production in the first place. You keep thinking why...

Too much violence, death, even torture for a G movie
Violence is everywhere in our current world. It's a fact of life, and as adults we all learn how to cope with it, avoid it, or confront it when we need to. I accept this fact. But I can't accept that in a movie rated "G", there are multiple scenes of violence, death, even torture. I'll need to explain these concepts to my child at some point, but I'd certainly prefer that I be able to wait until he's beyond the age of four. I'll be explicit so that other parents who are considering this movie will know exactly what they're in for: there are several scenes in which the "bad guy" pointedly tells his subordinates to "kill him" (directed a Finn McMissile and Mater). There is a full-blown torture scene in which a car is restrained, heated to the pain point, and then destroyed (the actual death is shown only as a reflection). There are a lot of guns, bullets, and missiles. There's plenty of hand-to-hand (or wheel-to-wheel) combat, which seems like a picnic after the other stuff.
I'm...

Miss Sadie Thompson

Overblown interpretation of basically good story
This 1953 film stars Rita Hayworth in a loosely adapted version of a Somerset Maugham story. It takes place on a American occupied Pacific Island where the marines, and especially Aldo Ray, are all quite smitten with Miss Sadie Thompson, a tough and sexy lady who loves to party and who is forced to spend some time there because her ship is quarantined. Jose Ferrer, cast in the role of an angry and dour preacher quarantined there too, manages to arrange for her to be deported. He has his own weaknesses, however, which are revealed as the story progresses. The inevitable tragic conclusion has a typical Hollywood ending, but the basic theme is there.

Ms. Hayworth sure looks pretty. She has flaming red hair and wears brightly colored clothes and every movement of her body draws the eye. As she can't sing, though, she lip synchs through several non-memorable musical numbers and her acting abilities vary from scene to scene. Occasionally, the actress in her shines through, but...

Blue Pacific Blues
With the haunting song "Blue Pacific Blues" in the background the beautiful Rita Hayworth portrays a loose woman running from her past in the south sea islands soon after WWII. Aldo Ray, a young Charles Bronson, and Jose Ferrer play out the drama of religion vs love, lust, and loneliness. This is a must-see movie for the person who fantasizes about the lure of the tropics and has a romantic familiarity with the war in the Pacific.

Why isn't it on DVD?
Miss Sadie Thompson

This movie is well worth watching, if only for Rita Hayworth's fabulous, "The Heat is On" dance number. But I don't understand why it's not available on DVD, given that "Trouble in Texas," "Charlie Chan in Egypt" and a few of her other, early, and not as interesting films, are. I'd also like to see "Tonight and Every Night" on DVD as well. That film has some great dance sequences. Given how little Rita was allowed to produce in her best years, at least Sony/Columbia Pictures ought to produce the better ones in current technology. My own view is that Rita Hayworth's talent went far beyond the glam image, both in acting and dancing, and should be recognized as such. I read the book "Being Rita Hayworth," which was an interesting analysis of Hollywood and actors such as Rita's efforts to forge an identity and claim the value of their work, despite all the hype and iconography.

Dark Circle

DARK CIRCLE in the Winners' Circle
I had the honor and privilege of helping Chris Beaver with the NY premiere of DARK CIRCLE back in the day. I have never ever been so affected by a documentary as I have with DARK CIRCLE. Aside from the meticulaously researched and detailed scientific information made available in the film, the presentation is one that cannot be argued with. And even though it was done in the days of the anti-Nuke movement (where has that movement gone, btw?), I have watched it every year since, and it is frightening how relevant it is today - still. This is a film that must not be missed, must be discussed and watched over and over. The style of the docurama, as Amazon calls it, is riveting. Judy's narration is to the point and non-dramatic which makes it all the more moving, the interviews are dramatic AND true stories from everyday people, and YES! with the current administration's pro-nuke attitude, if you don't see this film, you will be left in - the dark circle. SEE IT NOW.

Must see for anyone interested in the U.S. weapons program
This film will haunt your days and nights, it is a deep inside look at the U.S. nuclear weapons program, its cost in financial and human terms, and security or lack of it is at times frightening.

Produced by a highly talented team originally aired for POV on PBS, now hard to find, but definitely worth a watch for scientists, historians, and anyone interested in the MADness of mutually assured destruction.

Great Film
This is a great film. I saw it years ago on television and was very moved by it. Years later, I saw "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill," by the same director (Judy Irving). Another excellent film. I'm glad "Dark Circle" is now available on DVD. It's a classic. Informative yet emotionally wrenching.

I truly admire Andrew Zimmern for being so passionate about exploring other cultures! Bizzare Foods America is, in my opinion, just as good as the original. It was so interesting watching him travel the world and relate to people through food, now he's traveling around where we call home!

Star Of Midnight

A Little Gem
This fun little detective mystery based on a serial story of the 1930's by Arthur Somers Roche has William Powell and Ginger Rogers in fine form and RKO's great sets of the period for 90 minutes of delightful distraction. It is little known and sometimes gets a bad rap when it is talked about, since it came on the heels of the origional Thin Man. But it is, in fact, very entertaining and Powell and Rogers are a hoot together. The mystery is good, if a bit slow at times, and it is easy to see where another series could have been launched if the circumstances had been right.

William Powell is uptown lawyer Clay Dalzell, who everyone calls Dal, and Ginger Rogers is his long-time assistant and wanna be spouse Donna Mantin. She's known him since childhood, but she's no kid anymore and the two have a very fun repore as they get involved in a mystery while she tries to get Dal to marry her. Dal playfully refers to Donna as a shameless hussy and fact distorter, and tells her at one...

Star of the Silver Screen
It is a real shame that this movie is not currently available in a format compatible with the US region. But if you have a region-free player it is well worth adding to the collection. The movie stars William Powell and Ginger Rogers in roles that could easily be the precursors to the characters of the Thin Man series. It is an excellent example of the murder mystery genre the William Powell made famous in those movies with Myrna Loy. And it introduced me to the Side Car, a cocktail as classic as the movie. Enjoy both of them!

"Star of Midnight (1935) ... William Powell & Ginger Rogers ... RKO Radio Pictures Film Noir"
RKO Radio Pictures present "STAR OF MIDNIGHT" (1935) (90 mins/B&W) (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Starring William Powell, Ginger Rogers, Paul Kelly & Gene Lockhart - - - Directed by Stephen Roberts and released on April 19, 1935, story line and film, Clay Dalzell is a suave attorney fonder of solving crimes than trying cases. His elegant girlfriend, Donna hopes that Clay will settle down and marry her. A friend, Tim Winthrop approaches Clay with a mystery that the amateur sleuth can't resist. Tim's girlfriend Alice disappeared a year ago. During the performance of a Broadway play, Tim spots Alice onstage, but she disappears again. Clay takes the case and sets up a meeting with a gossip columnist who seems to have the answers, but the reporter is murdered and Clay is suspected of the crime --- Yes its RKO doing their version of The Thin Man with Ginger Rogers replacing Myrna Loy. Check out RKO's "The Ex-Mrs Bradford" (1936) (also available from Amazon.Com) for another RKO "version"...

Angels in America, Part 2 - Chapter 5

Beautiful
The most beautiful play of the modern theatrical era translated perfectly by Mike Nichols and featuring incredible performances. You can't go wrong buying this one.

Amazing Script!
This was and still is not only a great movie but a very relevant story for today. Watched it dozens of times and will again!

The story of us.
Not so very long ago, the world found itself afflicted with a horrendous plague, AIDS. While treatment has mitigated much of the death sentence here in the states, I am not so sure we have passed on from the insular days of peering at our neighbors as if they threaten our very being. At the time of this story, we had been at the end of the Red Scare of Communism destroying America, but even a casual perusal of its portrayal will tell us that the names are different but the paranoia remains. The characters engage us deeply, and the angel keeps me peering from the corner of my eyes hoping for another approach.

Monster Camp

An interesting look into a misunderstood world.
If you ever feel like you don't belong or are misunderstood watch this film. It takes you to a place where people who just can't fit in with society gather to pretend like they fit in with a society that doesn't exist.

Yea confusing. No matter what you think about these types of people the film makers show an amazing insiders view of this strange and often disdained activity. It was eye opening and hilarious at the same time. If you like documentary on social subsets this is for you.

It's not as hyped, but far superior to Darkon
First a rant on that other LARP Documentary:

I was excited when the buzz about Darkon started. I had played in a LARP one time close to fifteen years ago, and although I was never in a position to ever go back and do it again, I enjoyed my experience so much that I still think fondly of it years later.
Darkon went to film festivals.
Darkon had a neat interactive promotional website.
Darkon was a huge disappointment.

Darkon spent far too much time talking about things that the viewer really doesn't care about, such as the internal politcs of a LARP which even though the players may be enthusiastic about, doesn't translate into somthing interesting for anyone outside of that particular LARP...even to other LARPers. They also spent an extrordinary amount of time outside of the LARP talking about the personal struggles of the players. We get it, they have sucky things going on in their lives...WE ALL DO, YOU AREN'T MAKING A POINT WITH THAT.
So in...

Terrific documentary
This is the best documentary yet made of the Live Action Role-Playing phenomenon. The character portraits captured is very valuable anthropological material for the understanding of sub-cultures. The director successfully emerses the viewer in the world of Live Action Role-Play thoroughly. This point is made clear when the director shoots a short interview of hikers who've stumbled upon the L.A.R.P.ers mid-game. Their questioning of the game seems curiously dim-witted. The director makes the normal people seem like outsiders.

The Special Features on the disc were very good. The deleted scenes were interesting. However, the director's commentary track was not synced properly to the video. This was unfortunate, because it was an excellent commentary with many interesting observations. I would still place this disc on my top 10 list of Greatest Pop-Culture Documentaries.

The Hangover Part II

I thought it was pretty funny
Yes, it is the EXACT same plot in almost every single way. This film is just another excuse for them, to continue the magic of first Hangover's success. Don't expect it to BLOW your mind with hilarity. But it definitely has its moments. Some very dumb moments too (Useless use of a helicopter, too.) But, I think its worth buying.

Glad I saw it. Good comedy, just not as good as the first.
If you liked the first one, then you will probably like this sequel. Same premise, same type of humor, and same wackiness.

One of the funnier movies this year.

LOL - I find it funny that all these reviewers are giving it 1 star because they are getting the UV Digital Copy along with the Blu Ray or DVD. That is really skewing the reviews for this. Doesn't make sense to me. Are you reviewing the movie, the Blu Ray, or just the UV digital copy? If "just the UV", are you giving the entire product package a fair review? Matter of fact, have most of you one-star reviewers even seen the movie? You definitely haven't seen the blu ray since most of your reviews are dated before the release.

Anyways, please ignore all the 1 star reviews related to the UV copy. IMO, these reviewers are not using the rating system appropriately. I understand they want to make a statement because they dislike the UV copies.

"Is that a Shiitake Mushroom?"
First off I have to say that when I watched the first Hangover in the theater I wasn't super impressed with it. Everyone was saying it was super hilarious, but I found it only mildly funny in a large auditorium with ~200 other people. When I rewatched it at home with just a few people it was infinitely better. This Part II however was completely hilarious in the theater and again at home. I found myself walking away trying to figure out how this movie made it into the public without an NC-17 rating. I suppose they are becoming more liberal with the rating boards. There are too many funny moments to pick just one. Needless to say this is a must see for fans of the first one, but at the same time some of the more light hearted folks may want to pass it up. Definitely not for anyone up 18.

Abducted, Kidnapped and Brutalized [HD]

k7
This was seriously intense from start to finish. I polished off an entire bag of potato chips while watching this I was so nervous. It's just one intense scene after the other! Had a great plot, too.

shane
Man, this is a really original movie. The story is basically a guy is kidnapped accused of committing a murder as a child. Really intense and not what you'd expect.

Kidnapped Viewer
Abducted and kidnapped redundant?
First warning of bad is a film made in 2011 and DVD released in 2013.
Second warning of bad is a unknown production conglomerate. Must have been a dead spot in their schedule to find time to release this or maybe they were just freed from abduction by viewing audience.
Third warning are cover graphics that have little to do with the overall tone of the movie or are just way overstated just to sell the product.
Fourth warning of bad. No subtitles to compensate for poor enunciation, poor dialogue script, bad audio. Not that anything of importance was said for 90% of the movie.
Fifth warning and this is very rare except in the cheapest of cheap - no scene or chapter option in main menu.
Sixth warning are lots of holes in the storyline such as how likely is it that the bride (in wedding gown) was kidnapped earlier and no one knows about it (police don't exist in this fairy tale).
Final warning of bad is me choosing to ff...

Second Chances
This was the first episode of "The Moment" hosted by Kurt Warner. It was originally aired unusually and I missed it, probably like many people. It is an interesting show in that the chosen individual gets a second chance at their "dream" profession which apparently had evaded them before. Warner is a excellent host for this because of his "second chance" in the NFL taking two teams to three Super Bowls. A well known story. The format involves the individual who gets this "second chance" to proceed through various steps and training by way of a known "expert" leading them. Once that is achieved, the individual has a final test that could determine whether they obtain employment by a known company or an individual of that particular profession. Whether this happens depends on how well the individual does in the test, whether the company/individual wants to hire them or whether that individual wants to accept the proposed employment. This...

Great work by Lou Jones, Kurt Warner and the photographer.
Well done. My photo career as of this moment is much like her's prior to The Moment. Lou Jones hit a home run.

Just wasn't that impressed
I'm not a huge reality show viewer in the first place, but I just couldn't get emotionally invovled with these people. Maybe I wasn't interested in sailing, or maybe they were boring, or maybe it was the filming. Not sure.

Leona's Sister Gerri

A Stunning Indictment
I believe I saw this documentary on public television as part of their Independent Focus documentary quite a few years ago. I've never forgotten it, because it haunts me still. From time to time, I would search on the web to find out the name of the film. All I could remember is the subject of the film was "sister Gerri." I'm so glad I was able to connect the dots through Google to finally find the correct title of this stunning documentary.

The image that remains in my mind is the central focus of this story. It's a startling B&W police photo (think Wee Gee) of a naked woman bent over and face down on the rug in a hotel room, her pocket book at her side and blood spattered on the carpet. She was the victim of an illegal abortion performed in that very hotel room. The woman was married w/ children and became pregnant through an affair. It was the early 60s and abortions were illegal. She was given the botched procedure and left there alone to die. What a stunning...

This my Aunt
This is my Aunt Gerry. When I was little I was told that she lost her baby while bowling. Then she was gone, leaving my 2 cousins with their father. They left for California. Both had a series of bad marriages, drug problems, etc. One went into the Marines, one married a musician. I only hear tragic tales of their paths. I don't wonder why. I find fault with the air of hush-hush of the times, but can understand how she came to this path. The child of farmer immigrants, there was no example set, not enough time to love and protect. Set out like wild animal babies, they all made due with what they had. What they had was also what they gave their children; myself, cousins, and siblings included. We make choices...she made choices. I had an abortion at 15, then at 18 with a tubal. Worst thing I ever did...EVER. But I made those choices and will bear myself. Abortion must remain legal, but with a broad taste of consultations to be mandatory.

Leona is my Mother.

Stunning and heart breaking
Wonderful and tragic film. I would like to thank all involved, especially Leona... how painful doing this must have been, such a brave lady to share this story with us. People need to see the human face of this issue, and this film does it so well, with such respect... More respect than Gerri was shown by those she mistakenly relied on in her life. Just looking at her simple purse, found at the scene brings tears to my eyes.

I first saw the infamous photo of Gerri in the Village Voice, reprinted many years after the event - my stomach dropped and my blood ran cold. It is a simple picture...yet so very heartbreaking. My generation did not have to endure this fate...but it could be that way again. I agree with the sentiment "Never Again". Women should not die needlessly for someone else's self righteous ideals. Life is messy, everything isn't black and white. Everyone should see this, regardless of where they stand politically on this issue. This film shows that it isn't just...

Endless Forms Most Beautiful [HD]

No-spoilers review--and you really need that for Orphan Black
If ever a TV show needed a no-spoilers review it's this one. The trouble is, everything's a spoiler when "Orphan Black" is concerned, and the less you know going in, the more fun you'll have with this show's onrushing tidal wave of plot twists and turns.

So--what can I tell you that will let you know whether you want to see this or not without spilling all those beans? Well, I'll try.

1. Don't see this if you need glossy, upbeat Hollywoody science fiction. There isn't a single Dudly Do-Right in the entire cast of characters. Everyone has issues. Everyone has baggage. Problems can't always be solved by sweet reason, Star Trek style. And who's a Good Guy or a Bad Guy isn't always clear, even when you learn just who and what they are. And with some of the more damaged characters, they can't necessarily be fixed--ever. Some things you can't come back from. And problems don't have quick fixes. That is, there's no pandering to your inner 12 year old. This is a show for...

Best beginning to a series.
I'm hard to impress about TV shows, especially beginnings. First episodes-- even for good ones-- can be awkward, with the cast and writers not yet finding the chemistry.

This one hit managed to hit maximum speed seconds after it began, and then spent the rest of the show proving there was more to spare. Somehow, it did this without sacrificing character development. Thanks to co-creator John Fawcett's taut direction, and remarkable performances by Tatiana Maslani as three physically identical women with distinct personalities, accents and mannerisms. She even plays one mimicking another, with her cockney accent wavering.

The story is about Sarah, a young woman surviving on the margins as a hustler and a drug dealer, who's just walked out on her boyfriend. She witnesses a stranger identical to herself, Beth, commit suicide. Sarah steals and assumes her identity. Despite the fact that Sarah had little to lose, it turns out this was not the best move. The mysterious...

Not the same clone.
Story seems at first to be something you've seen before but quickly intrugued me with its nuances and excelent preformance by the lead actress Tatiana Maslany. I realy believe when she's portraying the diffrent clones on screen at the same time. That they are their own unique characters.

A FANTASTIC DVD!
This is one fantastic DVD and should not be missed! All four singers are extremely passionate about the message they give. They are obviously bonded in an unusual way, and are also a lot of fun to watch. I always say that one has to SEE Aaron Crabb sing to fully appreciate him, and this DVD proves that. And I--and the audience--very much like Tim Duncan's spectacular bass voice. The songs selected cover a wide range of Gospel music, and the bonus numbers are fabulous! A DVD that carries a lot of joy and inspiration!

Very enjoyable
I enjoyed seeing Tim Duncan back on a stage again. Don't overlook the bonus tracks! They are just as fun as the rest of the DVD.

Awesome!!
If you like southern gospel music you will lobe this. It is so good & such a blessing! Can't go wrong with this one.

Home Sweet Home

Praise for 'Home Sweet Home.'
I caught this film in Albuquerque (Aliens and Outlaws)...and....it rocks! It's taught, gripping, and beautiful! I have never wanted to visit a locale so badly and steer completely away from it at the same time! (You'll know what I mean when you see the film).

The lead truly morphs before your eyes to rise up to the brutal challenges she faces. The villain is sexy and scary! I recommend this riveting adventure to anyone who enjoys high octane in their films.

'Home Sweet Home' manages to walk the thriller/horror line but remain extremely accessible to many film goers, and doesn't rely on gross outs and gore to keep audiences in their seats. Can't wait to pick up my blu ray of this film and drool over the cinematography on my 62" HD LED monitor! I"m also looking forward to seeing the making of featurette. My son is studying to be a film maker and wants to see how such a film was pulled off at its budget category.

Two thumps up for 'Home...

Suspense Thriller & a good one at that
Pretty good flick & what a badass killer that actress is. Seriously screwed up and entertaining to boot. You can't wait to see that sinister quirk of a smile. You'll like it, it's a decent story - would have liked a different ending. This review is short only because I'm exhausted today - don't let it reflect poorly on the film, it's a good one guys.

Excellent! Home invasion with a difference.
I saw this film at the Albuquerque film festival where it took the awards for Best Horror Movie and Audience Favorite. So when I ordered it, I was surprised by the extreme polarization of reviews here. Evidently tastes and expectations differ greatly when a film does not fit the usual mold.

This indie home invasion thriller does not gratuitously splash blood for effect: the plot is more thoughtful than that. It primarily hinges on the contrasting characters of two women. Rachel Cantu plays the part of a sexy but dangerously psychopathic woman to near perfection, sometimes ditzy, sometimes coldly calculating, a person who enjoys toying with the lives of others. Director John Graham effectively uses her craziness and unpredictability to build suspense, to amuse and to shock. There are just enough comedic moments in the movie to keep one wondering just how nasty Cantu and her criminal lover, played by Christopher Dempsey, can be.

Alexandra Boylan plays opposite...

Thomas & Friends: Milkshake Muddle

Great edition for your Thomas lover!
My two year old adores this DVD! Because I'm a teacher, I'm always looking for a way to make his TV time more educational - the special features in this video get my vote! It's nice to have a short break between the stories to make your child think! There's a feature that has children matching shapes, then a maze that matches engines to their special job (ie - Percy to the mail cars). This dvd also has two songs (that will get stuck in your head if you aren't careful). Our edition also came with Duncan (purchased for the same price at Wal-mart). Several of the stories feature Duncan and Toby which was a delight for my son who just adores Toby. You are also introduced to Mighty Mac and Neville. The short stories are engaging and enjoyable for you and your child (OK, maybe not you after the 50th time, but the first few times are great!) Even better, we get out our trains and recreate the story after it's done.

The interface of the DVD is great! You aren't forced to watch ad...

Great Value
My 3 year old loves the Thomas shows and this is such a great value getting a wooden train that would normally sell for $13 and up along with the DVD. The DVD has some really cute episodes on it too!

A must for little Thomas fans...
...but starting to conform a little too much to modern "sensibilities" for this grown up. The older, closer-to-the-original-story episodes are more fun, silly and nonsensical. By comparison, the engines' distinctive personalities are noticeably watered-down from the early episodes, and there is a lot less technical detail. We still love it, though. Beats the pants off Barney any day.

Lake Noir [HD]

LAKE NOIR --- MORE BRAIN DAMAGE
My previous experience with Brain Damage films has been less than memorable: cheap production values, horrible effects and acting, totally reliant on gore, violence, sex and stupidity. When I rented LAKE NOIR, I wasn't aware it's spawn of Brain Damage's seed. Thank God I didn't buy it!
LAKE NOIR does have a slightly better "look" but not significantly. The script is padded with pointless minutes of driving past boring vistas and lengthy diatribes on sexual conquests and the lack thereof. Once again, a group of idiots go off on a weekend getaway to some isolated destination merely to drink, smoke pot and have sex---why not just stay home, save money and your life? And once again, no one pays attention to the local looney who warns them to stay away---haven't these jerks seen a horror movie lately? And the ending is a real hoot, with the final credits warning us of the next LAKE NOIR saga??? Do yourself a favor----avoid this movie and any future Brain Damage assaults!

I really tried to like this movie.
I am sorry to have to say how bad this movie was. The actors were new and/or inexperienced. They were probably just starting out or wanted to be actors. With that being said, I must say the movie was awful!!! I could barely watch it. I skipped through most of it because of the bad dialogue and acting. It was just so bad it was almost funny.

The box, as always, tricked me. I had to throw my copy away. At least, I didn't waste very much money, but I do wish I had it back.

I loved the movie
I for the most part don't enjoy horror movies. In fact it seems to me that most horror movies have a lot of blood and gore and not much of a story line. I enjoyed this, because it had a story line and a surprise twist which I always enjoy. I would recommend this movie to others who enjoy horror or some that just want a fun movie to enjoy. If there is a second movie I will definitely enjoy that as well. At least I will pay good money to buy and watch anyway.

Romeos (English Subtitled)

ROMEOS: A 'No Apologies' Kind of Movie!
Wow. Romeos moved me in so many ways that I feel...speechless. It's been a long time since I watched something that made the tiny hairs on my arms stand on edge. Moved to tears not only because of the performances (although they were extremely good) but because...finally someone has come along and made a movie so brutally honest, without apologies, on a topic that so many people are ignorant about. And we all know what happens when people are ignorant. Ignorance leads to fear and fear leads to blind hatred. That ignorance, fear, and hatred is what kills our youth, whether its from suicide or bashing.

Romeos was one of the movies I actually paid to see at last years 2011 Philadelphia Q-Fest. And guess what? When my mom and I got to the theater and were standing in line, we found out that something was wrong with the film equipment, therefore, we could either get a refund or come back tomorrow. Well, I had work the next day and I live about a good 40 mins from Philadelphia,...

An enjoyable film...
Romeos is one of those rare gems that tugs at your heart strings and makes you cheer for the hero of the film. This movie has a lot of heart and soul. It was funny at times yet serious all the same with a very relatable subject matter to those going through what the main character is going through of a person trapped in the wrong body finding his place in the world and all the while searching for acceptance from the people around him and from within.

Rick Okon, who plays the brave and rebellious Lukas, a gay trans man who is transioning from female to male, is simply amazing. He played the character with such realism and truth that I couldn't take my eyes off of him, more so than the object of Luka's attraction, Fabio, the closetted bad boy played by Maximilian Befort, who was amazing as well in the film. The other actor who stood out in the film for me was Liv Lisa Fries, who played Lukas lesbian BFF -Ine, who had to accept her childhood friend transformation from a girl...

Excellent film.
OMG this is a great movie. Guaranteed to make you laugh and cry and just say to yourself WOW. I love the German gay interest movies. Always a treat. The story is excellently written and acted. The main characters give it their all especially Rick Okon who is just amazing. Well worth the money. You will watch it over again.

Out of Africa (Blu-ray + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

Africa DVD is Gorgeous
The transfer of OUT OF AFRICA is gorgeous on this newly released DVD. The African sun is bright and the detail is crisp -- very important since the scenery is practically a third character in this Oscar-winning "Best Picture" from 1985.

I really enjoyed "Song of Africa", the documentary created for this DVD release. Not mentioned in the DVD's technical specs, this documentary features several cut scenes not included in the film (except in a network television showing). Example: the subplot of the servant boy with the bad leg whom Karen Blixen heals. There are a few Redford-Streep scenes there, too, which ended up on the cutting room floor (a last dance among Karen Blixen's packed-up home; a made-up story on safari.)

Also, the documentary features incredibly funny and entertaining tales told by Meryl Streep. She is a great mimic -- listen to the sound effects that woman can make! At times hilarious and reflective, she shares stories about the...

Beyond this place there be dragons
"Out of Africa" stands out as one of the most spectacular movies ever made. At the 1985 Academy Awards this movie won seven Oscars including Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Picture. It deserved all seven!

It is filled with romance, scenery, real-life struggles and the inevitability of fate. It is a journey into Africa and into love. The escape is in the hand of fate. This movie presents Africa as a paradise. The natural environment is harsh, yet unspoiled in this movie.

This is based on the true story of Danish writer Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep) who left Denmark to marry German Klaus Maria Brandauer/Baron Bror Blixen (Klaus Maria Brandauer) and start a dairy in Kenya.

Some women do enjoy the security of a man looking after them, however Karen is different. She seems to desire companionship and offers her fortune in exchange for marriage. Her husband changes his mind about the dairy and instead they use her money on a risky...

The Invisible Man: One of the Best Films of the 30s
Between directing the original "Frankenstein" in 1931 and his masterpiece "Bride of Frankenstein" in 1935, James Whale put out a little gem called "The Invisible Man" in 1933. In some ways I rate "The Invisible Man" above "Frankenstein." For one thing "The Invisible Man" has a great musical score which heightens the drama in many scenes and helps to speed the pace of the film. The original "Frankenstein" had no musical score (strange one was never added for re-release as it would have improved an already great film tremendously) as musical scores weren't commonplace until a few years later. I also think that Whale had developed greatly as a director between 1931 and 1933. "Frankenstein" has many scenes that seem to be stagey and lack the finesse of Whale's later films.

In many ways "The Invisible Man" is Universal's most horrific horror film of the 1930s. Dracula was a vampire who killed to sustain his own existence, Frankenstein's Monster was a misunderstood and...

The Trials and Tribulations of Invisibility
The movie Van Helsing may have been pretty awful, but it did do one good thing in giving Universal a reason to release a lot of its old monster movies. The Invisible Man boxed set is the second best in the bunch, behind only Frankenstein but ahead of Dracula, the Wolf Man and the Mummy. (I have not viewed the Creature boxed set).

The strength in this set is due to two things: the high caliber of the original movie and the fact that all five movies have unique stories. Compare this with the Mummy boxed set in which the four sequels to the original movie all have essentially the same plot.

The original movie is top quality, principally due to the direction of James Whale, clearly the best of the monster movie directors (his other works include the excellent Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein). Claude Rains plays the title character, initially sympathetic but eventually a villain as madness accompanies his invisibility. For those familiar with Gloria Stuart...

Pretty Little Liars: The Complete Third Season

love this show
This show is addicting! Be careful once you start you won't be able to stop! I hate waiting until next week for the next episode!

Love it!!!
I absolouteley LOVE this show!! Cant wait to find out who the new A is! You can watch this season live on Abc family on tuesday nights.

PLL Season 3
I only recently starting watching PLL recently. I started with Seasons 1 and 2 on Netflix and was sucked in enough to purchase the first 10 episodes of Season 3 on Amazon Instant so that I could catch up to the current season.

Critiques that this show are far-fetched and that the acting is occasionally sub-par are accurate, but the twists, turns, and camp are what make this show so fun to watch.

The four main characters, despite being the title "liars," each have their own set of flaws that make them loveable and while at first the audience wonders "why are these girls even friends?" soon enough the friendship among them seems genuine and you are on their side as they try to figure out who murdered their best friend and who the mysterious "A" is.

Ordering this with the TV pass a great idea. I was able to purchase all the early episodes of Season 3 for a reasonable price and then cancel it when I was caught up enough to watch the new episodes currently...

Fluid Technique with Zoe Jakes - 2 disc set

Really good primer
So I will start this review by saying the I received mine as part of a contest hosted by the producer of this DVD. I will on the other hand be as honest as I can be. So to start out this review I have been doing Egyptian/Cabaret style belly dance for a year now and recently have started taking lessons in the tribal style. I have a strong dance background in other styles such as Ballroom dance and have begun taking yoga lessons regularly.

So for tribal DVDs I will say that Zoe Jakes has the best on screen personality that I have encountered she seems friendly to the audience even though we aren't there. Which is really important, I have the Serpentine DVD and unfortunately the narrating in that DVD is much to monotone and impersonal for my taste making it hard to use for practice. That being said I feel like some parts of the DVD could be improved.

The warm-up for both discs is the same, while I have no problem with that normally some of the moves that were...

A belly dance most
It is Zoe Jakes. Need I say more. I think it there is a ton of information in this set of DVDs. I am a beginner so this is beyond my experience but It is a reference guide that I will use for a long time. It is worth the money.

Revenge From The Deep

Finally!
Since this series was never syndicated, finding ways of watching it were tough to say the least. The first season was all we had available on DVD, but that was probably the weakest of all of them.

Sherman Howard makes a welcome change as the new Lex Luthor. His origin of becoming Lex Luthor is a little whacky, and conveniently never referred to again, but he makes a great villain nonetheless. Gerard Christopher taking over the title character is a little awkward if you've just come off of the first season, but he grows into the role nicely as the series progresses. And the stories begin to mature here, as well. They're not as dark in tone was the 3rd and 4th seasons, but they're definitely less campy than the 1st season.

As far as the DVD itself, first of all, I was surprised to find that these are NOT DVD-R's as their description says. These are regular old, factory-pressed DVDs. The audio and picture are greatly improved from the first season, too. You...

Better than season 1 and worth the wait
I had waited so long on Warner to bring out the second season of this series that I had given up. I'm very glad they finally decided to listen to the fans and do a second season. The second season (and season 3 and 4) are much better than season 1. If you are a superman fan (especially of the late seventies version of superman) I think you will like this series. It is NOT dark, it is NOT outstanding special effects, but it IS a very enjoyable story and fun to watch.

Oh and contrary to another viewer's review these discs ARE DVRs (which you can plainly see by looking at the surface of the discs), but they are well done and look very much like factory-made DVDs based on the design and quality of the artwork. I had no problems playing these discs on my Blu-ray player. Warner, please don't make us wait years to bring out the final two seasons of this great series. Highly recommended.

A big difference since season 1
Those of you who were disenchanted with this groundbreaking series, I ask you to please give it a second chance. This second season began new changes which completely took the series in a new direction to become one of the very best incarnations of 'Superman' ever put to film.
When executive producer Ilya Salkind created this series originally it was set at Schuster university. The first season was cheesy and the special effects had much to be desired. The show was in danger of cancellation by the end of the first season so drastic measures were taken to save the show. What they did was genius.
Gone was John Haymes Newton as the lead role replaced by Gerard Christopher. Gone was the poorly casted Scott Wells and replaced by the most noticeable and greatest cast change Sherman Howard who now played a truly sinister Lex Luthor who was inspired by the great Jack Nicholson's portrayal of the Joker in the first Batman movie which, at the time, was still fresh in people's minds...

Chupacabra vs. The Alamo

Humorous SyFy Silliness That Makes The Most Of Its Leading Man, Erik Estrada
4 stars: Lovers of Cheesy SyFy Fare
1 1/2 stars: Everyone Else

In approaching a SyFy channel original creature feature, there are only so many resultant options available in terms of entertainment value: (1) The movie can be unrelentingly and painfully bad, (2) it can be so delightfully horrendous that it's camp nirvana, or (3) it can be genuinely frightening or effective. Faithful fans of the network's slate of films will realize that most fall within the first category while only a miniscule few hit that third category. No, as a true SyFy fan, I generally hope for that second classification: cheesy goodness that makes bad movie magic! You know with the title "Chupacabra vs. The Alamo" that this latest endeavor isn't even trying for genuine scares or seriousness. Boasting the stellar talents of Erik Estrada and Julia Benson (she's a headliner, but I wasn't familiar with her resume), I was definitely afraid for the worst. Truthfully, though, the movie pleasantly...

MY DOG ATE MY HOMEWORK
Carlos Seguin (Erik Estrada) and his new partner Tracy (Julia Benson) are investigating a murder. Erik believes it is some kind of gang killing while Tracy opts for CG canines. If you read the title of the film, you already now it is the CG canines known as Chupacabra, which look like a big ugly coyote. Carlos has family issues which become part of the film as they try to iron out their problems.

The special effects make for a campy film. The CG animals, CG gun fire, and the scenery moving in the background as Erik rides his bike, like a 1940's film. His jumping over a car and the use of a CG grenade was perhaps the highlights of the campy humor. The dialouge was fairly lame with noticeable music and scene changes for commercial breaks.

There is plenty of fake blood and killing as these animals who have lived in the wild have mastered door knob operations with their first attempt. Unless you are a fan of bad SyFy films, stay away.

Parental Guide: No...

A must see for San Antonio residents
If you live in San Antonio, you will LOVE this movie. This movie is so bad it's good. Several screen shots of SA mixed in with piss poor CGI. This is some of the worst Spanish you'll ever hear spoken. And who knew that whenever you drive in San Antonio, you'll always pass by the riverwalk/Alamo?

My favorite line "You can't ground me dad...It's Cinco de Mayo!".

Fight to the Finish Line [HD]

good stuff!
i mostly watch this show to see swamp man Shelby ! some of the other groups have some entertainment value and i respect what they do but alot of the drama is all staged.all the logging is tuff work and very dangerous which is interesting in its own right. Shelby is a show in of his own.the producers dont have to mach up a fake story for this fella. they just follow him around with cameras and thats enough.please give him a 30 minute show of his own.

love ax men
Have watched ax men from the beginning. I love to see Shelby, never liked Jimmy Smith and his whiny kid. This is reality tv, not that staged stuff like South Beach Tow, American Chopper, Sons of Guns, we will shoot an episode for some star or setting kind of stuff. Signed, William J. Price

Hooked
Not sure why we love this show so much. But we do. Shelby Stanga needs his own show. I love Willy dog.
